The bigger picture

More than your gut.

Your gut doesn't exist in isolation. What you eat, how your body feels, and the patterns you build over time are all part of a bigger picture.

HappyGut gives you a simple way to see that picture — one meal, one score, and one pattern at a time.

  • Everyday meals

Start with the food you already eat, not a restrictive plan.

  • Patterns over time

Watch your habits take shape across days and weeks.

  • Clear, simple scores

One number that makes a meal easier to think about.

  • Context, not verdicts

Learning content that explains the why behind the score.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

A few straightforward answers about how HappyGut works and how your information is handled.

  • Your gut plays an important role in your overall health — it's connected to digestion, immunity, energy, and much of how your body functions day to day. Most food apps focus on calories or macronutrients, but those numbers don't tell you much about how a meal actually relates to your gut. HappyGut takes a different approach and looks at four food-related areas that are especially relevant to gut health:

    • Fibre — important for feeding beneficial gut bacteria and supporting normal digestive function.
    • Microbiome — reflects things like plant variety and fermented foods that contribute to a diverse gut environment.
    • Digestion — considers characteristics of the meal that influence how easily it can be broken down and processed.
    • Anti-inflammatory — considers nutritional characteristics associated with supporting a balanced inflammatory response.

Each of these four areas is scored individually, then brought together into one overall Health Score. The result is a broader, more meaningful picture of how a meal may support your gut — and, in turn, your overall well-being — than a calorie count alone could ever give you.

  • The process is simple on your side and careful on ours:

    1. You take a photo of your meal.
    2. HappyGut identifies the foods and ingredients visible in the image.
    3. It estimates the amount of each food, including an approximate quantity such as grams or ounces.
    4. That information is used to determine the relevant nutrition for the foods and their estimated quantities.
    5. The meal is evaluated across the four scoring areas: Fibre, Microbiome, Digestion, and Anti-inflammatory.
    6. You receive the overall Health Score along with the individual breakdown — including explanations of what helped the meal and what held it back.

The system uses multiple parameters together with the visible information in your photo to make each estimate as useful and accurate as possible. Naturally, photo-based portion estimates can't always be exact — but the goal is a score that's consistently helpful, meal after meal.

  • During onboarding, HappyGut asks what you'd like to focus on — for example bloating, skin, energy, brain fog, mood, getting sick often, or simply learning more about your body.

HappyGut then uses that focus to make your meal explanations, insights, and educational content more relevant to you. Your food is always scored consistently — the Health Score itself never changes based on your selection. What changes is the context: HappyGut explains your meals in a way that connects to the things you actually care about.

  • No — HappyGut is a wellness and food-awareness app. It helps you understand what you're eating, identify the foods in your meals, track them over time, notice patterns, and see how different meals may relate to areas of gut and overall well-being. It can provide genuinely useful information and personalized interpretations, but it does not diagnose or treat medical conditions, and it isn't a replacement for medical care or professional advice. Think of it as a smart companion for understanding your food — with your doctor remaining the right place for anything medical.

  • Your health and meal information stays with your HappyGut account. It is not sold, and it is not used for third-party advertising or cross-app tracking. Meal photos are stored privately as part of your HappyGut data — they're used to provide the meal-scanning experience, never publicly displayed, and never sold.

Your information belongs to you: you can manage your account, and you can delete your HappyGut account and the data associated with it from inside the app. For the complete details, take a look at our full Privacy Policy.
